Definition of Emotion The word “emotion” comes from the Latin word emotus which means “a movement from, or outward.” Emotion, therefore, signifies a tendency towards action that arises from some inner need and is directed toward the outside world. As ordinarily defined an emotion is a complex phenomenon which implies a state of being stirred up or aroused in one way or another, involving extensive visceral disturbance, including many feeling tones and resulting in some sort of an overt action.
